completed proper forward simulation. and there is a problem. forward integrating with a quickly changing fn is a nightmare. as it's pretty easy to break the integrator due to many switches. hopefully those in sundials will have some options for dealing with this, ex. i get to set some parameter so that i say that i don't exactly care about where the transition is, just that it's there somewhere
